The attic on the edge of possible is one of our favorite projects, because of how challenging it was.
With its 35 sq.m. with bevels, only two windows, located in an old building in which every beam and wall are load-bearing and in combination with the high expectations that the client had for us, to develop a really lively space.
In the beginning, those were actually three ceilings, which we combined in one apartment while working with a construction engineer. At 35 sq.m. we made a master bedroom with a built-in closet (10.5 sq.m.), a second bedroom (7.5 sq.m.), a living space with a kitchen (9 sq.m.), a bathroom and a separate toilet.
Since this is a young lady’s main home, it had to have enough space to store clothes, shoes, jewelry, and a fully functional kitchen. To meet this challenge, we drew ideas and applied techniques from the design of caravans and mobile homes.
At a width of only 176 cm, we mastered a fully equipped kitchen with a built-in refrigerator & camera, an oven with a microwave function, a built-in washing machine with a dryer, induction hobs, a hood with spice shelves, a sink, and storage cabinets. To save space, the knives are placed on a wall-mounted magnetic stand. The lack of enough working space in the kitchen is overcome, as the dining table is made from the thermal countertop of the kitchen. Thus, it becomes its natural continuation of the kitchen.
All the attic niches have been used and turned into closets, as well as there is a vertical development of the furniture. The sofa has a chest and a sleep function. There are narrow shoe cabinets next to the entrance door. In the master bedroom, the bed folds up easily against the wall, leaving the whole room free. While in the second bedroom, the bed is higher than the standard and thus has two rows of drawers for storage under the mattress. We have optically expanded and lengthened the room by installing a mirrored wall and vertical beams, and between them, there is a shallow desk that can be folded to the wall.
A big challenge was the separation of three rooms while having only two windows. We solved the problem with the light sources by illuminating the entire ceiling of the living-kitchen area, which is a room without a window, and created a feeling of warmth and coziness.
